The earworm is a pesky creature that infiltrates our brains and makes a home there for days on end. This can be a good thing, if you love the song, or it can be a huge nuisance. Beach for Tiger’s new single, Black Buddha,” has been stuck in my head for days for all the right reasons.

Readers of this site know that Culture Devourer loves the music that’s coming out of the UK right now, and that this isn’t the first time Beach For Tiger’s been covered on the site. In May, I wrote a review of their excellent EP, Afternoons in SpaceIt’s always exciting to hear the work that’s coming from the London five-piece.

“Black Buddha” is a logical next step for the group and fits in well with their previous work, marked by their signature bubblegum psychedelic dreaminess. The track is reminiscent of the dog days of summer – hazy days on the beach, digging your toes in the sand while the sun gently strokes your skin.

The song recalls the work of mid-70s Bowie combined with the early years of The Flaming Lips circa Yoshimi. “Black Buddha” is also notable for the excellent guitar work – a smooth, measured tone combined with a dreamy guitar solo make the song worth multiple plays. The synths are also add another, dream-pop infected layer, making the track as lush as a garden in spring.

If Beach for Tiger found their groove with Afternoons in Space, they’ve nicely settled into it on “Black Buddha.” It’s a veritable candy shop for the ears.
